As we all know, aging can’t be undone or prevented. That being said, this doesn’t mean we have to accept the changes in skin quality that show up as we age, especially those that appear on the face. Dermal fillers like Juvederm are specifically designed to help combat the aging process, and luckily, they can be performed by our expert Shea Kaplan, the Beverly Hills Sculptress.
Does Juvederm Make You Look Younger?
To give a simple answer to an intricate question, yes, Juvederm does make you look younger. Because it counteracts the symptoms and appearances of aging in our skin, it can easily restore plumpness and shape to the face.
The process isn’t quite that simple, though. A few further points should be addressed to fully answer this question and all of its nuances.
What Is Juvederm?
This is an injectable dermal filler specifically designed to encourage moisture retention in the face. This can show itself in a variety of ways by counteracting wrinkles, bumping out creases and folds in the face, and restoring volume to previously fuller areas.
How It Works
The active ingredient is hyaluronic acid, which is a material already present in the human body that encourages moisture molecules to bond to each other.
Since it’s naturally occurring our bodies, the skin tolerates it extremely well and knows just what to do with it. When it is injected into parts of the body like the face, the hyaluronic acid acts in much the same way it does when it occurs naturally – it encourages moisture molecules to bond and form more plump, voluminous pads.
As these areas become more full, so does the skin above them, therefore counteracting the negative effects of aging.
The Aging Process
Whether we like it or not, everyone ages. As the body ages, natural moisture retention and springy support materials in the body, such as collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, start to be produced in less and less abundance. This makes the skin less full, allowing wrinkles and folds to appear where our muscles expand and contract.
Since the root of the aging problem in the face is volume loss, a quick and effective way to counteract aging is to restore volume to the face. Different areas of the face age differently, so the best ways in which volume can be added back depends on which area is being targeted.
Aging and the Areas of the Face
The Cheeks and Mid-Face
One of the facial changes people notice as they age is a loss of definition on their cheekbones and the surrounding area. As volume is lost on the cheekbone, the whole area becomes softer and the skin begins to sag. This can even go so far as to cause areas around the chin to appear droopy.
A good way to counteract aging in the cheeks and mid-face is to restore this lost volume through injection and bring definition back to the area.
There are a large number of muscles that expand and contract around our lips, which is one of the reasons why wrinkles often become prominent in this area. Smile lines, laugh lines, even some wrinkles caused by smoking – these are all indentations and laxities in the skin caused by continued and repeated movements.
These can all be counteracted by regaining fullness around the mouth and lips, bumping the wrinkles out and bringing a soft tension back to the area.
Much like the lips, the eyes are another very expressive area of the face, meaning they age and get wrinkles in many of the same ways. For example, as we expand and contract our eyes, raise and lower our eyebrows, fine lines like crow’s feet begin to appear around the outer eye.
Luckily, aging around the eyes can be treated in a similar way too, by returning tension and fullness to the area.
Types of Juvederm
Multiple types of this product have been developed to treat different areas of the face and the varying levels of aging that come with them.
Because the cheeks age differently than the eyes or lips, it makes sense that you wouldn’t want the same product used in the cheeks as you would other parts of your face. Luckily, there is a whole suite of products to accommodate these nuances in skin texture.
What Is Voluma?
Voluma is the strongest of the Juvederm family of products. What we mean by “strongest” is that it has the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid. Since hyaluronic acid is the active ingredient, having more of it incites more of a reaction, meaning more plumping can occur and more volume can be restored.
Where Should Voluma Be Used?
Voluma is best used in the areas of the face that need the most volume restoration, like the cheeks. As we said before, volume loss in the cheeks can cause laxity in more than just the cheekbones, so Voluma can help bring shape and definition back to the contour of the whole face.
It’s important to remember that though we describe Voluma as the strongest of these products, this doesn’t mean it is too strong to look natural. It’s designed to fit right into the expansive areas of the face.
What Is Vollure?
Vollure is the second-most impactful of this family of treatments. Basically, the concentration of hyaluronic acid is a little less here than in Voluma. It won’t incite as strong of a reaction, but this doesn’t mean there won’t be a noticeable change.
Where to Use Vollure
Since Vollure is subtler than Voluma, it’s great when used in the largest folds and creases in the skin, such as the nasolabial folds (the lines that start at the nose and frame the mouth). It can create just enough fullness to bring these folds back out into the natural plane of the face without causing them to look stretched or unnatural.
What Is Volbella?
Volbella is just like Voluma and Vollure except that it is, again, slightly less concentrated. Though less concentrated, it still has plenty enough hyaluronic acid to bring some major change to the face.
Where Should Volbella Be Used?
Volbella is perfect for the most nuanced and intricate areas of the face where fine lines and wrinkles can appear. This means it is perfect for the areas around the lips and eyes. Furthermore, Volbella can be used in the lips themselves to provide youthful plumpness.
Similar to Voluma, describing Volbella as the least concentrated of these products does not mean it won’t cause a noticeable change. It has less of the active ingredient so it can work well in more delicate areas without looking unnatural.
The Juvederm Suite
In answering the question of whether Juvederm can make you look younger, it’s important to understand that the overarching answer is yes, but that it works so well because of the balance of subtlety and noticeability within its levels of product. Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella are just some of their whole line of products that can help counteract aging in the face
The Treatment Process
If you’ve decided this is the right product for you, you are probably curious about the treatment process. Since it’s a medical treatment there may be some apprehension about how it’s done, but the entire process is straightforward and non-invasive.
Here are the usual steps:
As with any medical treatment, you should always have a consultation with the specialist who will be performing the injections, such as those at ReJUVU Day Spay & Beauty Haven. Consultations help make sure that the patient and the medical professional are in agreement about what issues are being addressed, how they will be addressed, and what the results will be.
At a consultation, you should bring up what about your face bothers you – wrinkles around your lips, looseness in your cheeks, and crow’s feet around the eyes are all possible examples. Your specialist will then examine these areas and talk with you about how to treat them and which products will work best.
Whether during the same appointment as the consultation or at a later date, you will eventually find yourself ready for treatment. Luckily, Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella are all simple, straightforward injections that don’t require any downtime.
In all likelihood, your treatment will take less than an hour. Afterward, you can head right back out to normal life.
As we’ve said, these products do not require any real downtime. After your appointment, you’ll most likely notice a gentle increase in fullness and plumpness in certain areas and a gentle decrease in wrinkles and lines. After a while, these changes will plateau, leaving you with the results you’ll be able to enjoy for up to two years.
1. Is It Safe?
Yes, all of these injectables are incredibly safe. Hyaluronic acid already occurs naturally in the body, so the body knows just what to do with the hyaluronic acid in Juvederm.
Since one of the causes of an aging appearance is a loss of naturally occurring hyaluronic acid, these treatments are more like returning the face to its previous state than injecting anything brand new.
2. How Long Will Results Last?
Results can last up to two years, though most patients time it at anywhere from one year to eighteen months. Don’t worry, this isn’t a one-and-done process. Once effects begin to fade, simply schedule another appointment at your beauty center to renew your treatment.
3. Will I Look Natural?
Yes. This whole suite of products is specifically designed to bring about natural-looking youthfulness in the face. As long as each product is administered correctly by a medical professional, you should expect nothing but natural results.
4. Is This Just for Women?
No, though this is a common misconception. Men and women both age, they both lose volume in the face, and they can both desire to do something about it. Vollure, Voluma, and Volbella work just as well for men as they do for women.
5. Can Multiple Products Be Administered in One Appointment?
Yes, more than one of these treatments can be done during one session. If this is something you are looking for, make sure to discuss it beforehand. Since the goal is to look naturally youthful, it’s important to find the right balance between aging and youthfulness.
