CO2 Laser Treatment: How Soon Will You See Results?

Too much sun exposure, acne, and even the natural aging process can all take a toll on your skin. CO2 laser resurfacing treatment at the Beverly Hills Sculptress in Beverly Hills, California can help you get your skin back to it’s natural, glowing state. With almost immediate results, laser resurfacing treatment is helping a lot of patients look and feel their best.

What Is CO2 Laser Treatment?

CO2 laser skin resurfacing is a painless, skin rejuvenation treatment that uses short, concentrated pulses of CO2 laser light to diminish the appearance of facial blemishes. Using the energy from a CO2 based laser, the treatment removes the outer layers of dead skin cells, revealing fresh, new skin underneath. The impact of the lasers activates the skin’s natural healing system, producing fresh collagen. The skin is also refreshed with new skin cells.

What Skin Concerns Does Treatment Target?

Skin resurfacing treatment with CO2 is highly effective for reducing visible signs of aging. Treatment is also used to address acne scarring, skin pigmentation irregularities, warts, and lesions.

How Soon Will I See Results?

Some results of the treatment are almost immediate. Other results progressively develop over the next three to six months after treatment. As a result of treatment, the skin rejuvenates and renews itself through a process that can last for a few months. During the months of skin renewal, the body produces more collagen and elastin, resulting in strong and supple skin that will last for several years. After treatment, the skin also develops stronger resistance to external forces that can damage the skin. As a result, fine lines and wrinkles will no longer develop so easily around the treated area.

How to Prepare

We recommend that our patients do certain things before and after their treatment sessions in order to maximize the efficiency of their results. Your pre-session preparation routine as well as your post-session maintenance routine play a significant role with regards to your results of treatment.

Before Treatment

We advise that you avoid tanning or heavy sun exposure prior to laser treatment. You should also try to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day for four weeks before their treatment. We advise our patients to avoid other intensely-concentrated facial procedures such as chemical peels and microdermabrasion for four weeks prior to their treatment session.

It’s also necessary for you to discontinue using medications that cause photosensitivity for at least 72 hours before treatment. If you’re currently on medication and you’re not sure whether it causes photosensitivity, you can check with our medical staff. We’ll let you know exactly what medications to temporarily discontinue before your treatment session.

Things to Do After Treatment

After treatment, we give our patients a thorough explanation on how to properly care for their skin so that they get the best results. Patients are advised to not scratch or pick at the treated area after their laser resurfacing treatment, as this can cause scarring. You should make sure to clean the treated area two to five times a day with a saline or diluted vinegar solution to prevent the skin from becoming infected. We also recommend certain post-session protective skincare treatments to help promote the healing of your skin.

You will need to use sunscreen daily after your treatment. We recommend that you use sunscreen that’s specially formulated for sensitive skin. After a laser resurfacing session, you should wait for about six weeks before using Retin-A or tretinoin based treatments.

What Happens During a Treatment Session?

During a laser resurfacing treatment session, our medical team will prepare your skin for treatment. After preparation, a laser beam composed of CO2 will be directed at your skin. The laser beam will effectively remove the blemished, outer-layer of your skin, heating the layer of the skin underneath. This process will stimulate your body’s natural collagen production cycle, resulting in a rejuvenated skin tone and texture.

After the laser treatment is finished, we will apply a thick, soothing ointment to the treated area. Your fresh, new skin will begin to reveal itself quickly, in a matter of one to two weeks. After your skin fully adjusts, you will be able to resume your routine activities.

How Long are Treatment Sessions?

The duration of treatment sessions depends on the individual needs of the patient. If you require treatment on only a specific part of the face, your session may last for about 30 to 40 minutes. If treatment is being conducted on the entirety of your face, the session may last for up to two hours.

Can I Shave or Wax After Treatment?

We advise our patients to avoid stimulating the treated area by touching or scratching it. Patients are recommended not to shave or wax immediately after treatment as this could irritate the skin and lead to infection. Our medical staff can give you further personalized post-treatment instructions concerning shaving or waxing of the treated area.

Can I Wear Makeup After Treatment?

Makeup should also be avoided immediately after a treatment session. Patients usually wait for about two weeks before starting to wear makeup again. This will allow the treated area to fully adjust without unnecessary aggravation or complications. Many patients are so impressed with their skin after treatment that they find little need to cover it up with makeup.

If you choose to start wearing makeup again two weeks after your treatment session, we recommend using oil-free makeup. Some patients also choose to wear green-based makeup, as this attractively compliments their skin as it continues to adjust after treatment. Our medical staff can help you decide what types of makeup to wear after your skin has fully adjusted.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The amount of treatments needed depends on the individual patient’s skin condition and their desired results. Patients with more noticeable skin irregularities may need multiple sessions before they begin to see their skin improve. Patients with minor irregularities may reach their desired results after a single treatment session. A consultation with our medical staff will help you properly estimate how many treatment sessions may be needed.

While many patients begin to see lasting results after just one session, it’s recommended that patients temporarily make laser resurfacing a part of their skincare routine. Our medical providers will help you determine a treatment schedule that fits your specific needs and helps you achieve your desired results as soon as possible.

What Is the Recommended Frequency of Treatment?

Your skin’s health and comfort are our main priorities. As a result, we strive to help you effectively schedule treatments so that you have enough time to recover and rest before your next session. For patients with severe skin concerns, treatments are usually scheduled every four weeks in order to achieve noticeable improvements. For patients with minor skin concerns, annual treatments are usually enough to help maintain results. For patients who simply need a one-time treatment to target a minor irregularity, we recommend a treatment session every five years.

How Long Do Results Last?

Results after a completed series of CO2 resurfacing treatments can last from around one to five years, depending on the patient’s skin concerns. We prepare a customized treatment schedule for our patients, helping them to fully realize their desired results as quickly as possible. After a patient’s sessions are finished, results are remarkably noticeable and long-lasting.

CO2 Laser Treatment Recovery Time

CO2 laser treatments involve a slightly longer recovery period than other resurfacing laser treatments. Because treatment with CO2 is ablative, meaning that it effectively improves skin by removing its blemished, outer layer, it often requires a recovery period of about one to two weeks. During CO2 laser treatment recovery, patients should make sure to follow the advice of our medical team in order to achieve the best post-treatment results.

Factors That Affect Results

Certain factors can improve or hinder the positive results of CO2 laser treatment. Factors that can contribute to the benefits of treatment are often related to how well the patient protects their skin from the sun and pollution. Avoiding needless sun exposure can do wonders to help patients achieve their desired results. We recommend that patients avoid sun exposure during the hours of the day where the sun’s UV rays are at their strongest. These times are usually between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm. Patients should also make sure to always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30.

Staying hydrated by drinking enough water and eating a well-balanced diet of fruits and vegetables can also help the skin to remain supple and rejuvenated. We advise our patients not to smoke or abuse alcohol in order to preserve the health of their skin. Cigarettes and excessive alcohol can dehydrate the skin, leaving it dull and saggy.

Is Treatment Suitable for Everyone?

Treatment is suitable for most patients who would like to improve the texture and appearance of the skin. Patients who struggle with fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, brown spots, dull skin, acne scarring, and skin laxity are great candidates for treatment. Our medical providers will provide treatment guidance for those who are on medications in order for all patients to receive effective and comfortable treatment. Though most patients are suitable candidates for laser resurfacing, patients who are pregnant or breast-feeding should not pursue CO2 laser treatment.

Most dark-skinned patients are statistically shown to seek skin rejuvenation treatments for skin blemishes such as acne scarring as opposed to fine lines and wrinkles. Also used to diminish the appearance of skin blemishes, CO2 laser treatments are suitable for patients with darker skin tones. Some considerations, however, must be taken into account.

Our medical staff takes the unique skin composition of each patient into consideration, regardless of skin type or skin tone. When treating patients with darker or more pigmented skin, we use the CO2 laser at a lower power setting and we limit the number of passes made over the treated area. Pigmented skin is shown to absorb about 40% more of laser energy than non-pigmented skin. Using a lower-powered setting for the laser ensures that only treated blemishes are targeted. When precautionary measures and care are implemented, Laser resurfacing treatments are completely suitable for all patients, regardless of their skin tone.
